Mahoney does it all at Poland

Invisible placeholder

PJ Mahoney has done it all at Poland.

He helped lead the Tornadoes' soccer team to a sectional title in the fall, played basketball in the winter and baseball in the spring. But those aren't the only places Mahoney excels.

"To be a standout athlete and a high academic achiever, you have to actually enjoy doing it," Mahoney said. "You can't look at it as a job. You have to look at it more as a lifestyle that you enjoy living."

That lifestyle resulted in Mahoney being named as the valedictorian for the Class of 2018.

"To be able to balance that time and put the effort into both like he did is a tremendous accomplishment," Poland principal and head baseball coach Craig Cuthbertson said.

Making i t more remarkable is the fact Mahoney plays high school sports year round, in addition to being apart of two summer baseball teams.

"It's very much about time management," PJ's ELA teacher Tracy Theilmann said. "You have to make sure you have priorities in the classroom and out of the classroom and then you have to find a way to balance those."

Balance is the exact thing Mahoney grapples with on a daily basis.

"You obviously have to sacrifice," Mahoney said. "Hanging out with friends sometimes doesn't happen and doing things you might want to do don't happen."

Once Mahoney officially leaves Poland and finishes up summer baseball, he'll turn his attention to college and NYU.

"NYU has an amazing baseball program," he said. "But their academics are (really good) and that's really what you're looking for out of a college."

New York City is a far cry from Poland with a population of over eight million people. By comparison, Poland's graduating class this year has 37 kids.

"I want to go through those changes and get a little bit of culture shock," Mahoney said. "Going to a big city like that isn't for everyone, but I think that's why it's very important that I experience it."
